2/24/2021 0 Comments Artist Statement "The Object"My artwork is a drawing of the globe, with a mask covering the middle of the world. The background of my artwork is newpaper print outs about covid-19. The world is colored in with oil pastels. I outlined the world and my mask with a black sharpie. Inside of the mask is words and statements about what life is like or used to be with covid. I chose to do a mask right away for this artwork because we had to think of what we use everyday, and now for almost a year everyday everywhere people have to wear masks. I used oil pastels and sharpie for the world and mask, then the background is printed out newpaper articles I found on google related to covid. I drew the world first getting the little outlines of land, then I drew in the mask. After that I wrote inside the mask what I have heard a lot and what our lives turned into because of covid. Then I colored it and cut it out. I made the background by using mos-pod on the articles making them stay down and then put the cut out world ontop of it. I lightly colored the mask with colored pencils. I was inspired by just thinking about what I use every single day and a mask came to mind right away. I looked up artworks about masks and covid and found some different pieces that added to everything. My artwork expresses a social issue, I know everyone is tired of hearing about covid this but it's our new reality and has been for awhile. I wasn't really trying to show a ton of emotions but when I see it I get sad and frusterated that all this is happening. I think I did a good job showing what I wanted to and I haven't seen an artwork like it before. I learned that planning ahead and working efficiently to get what you need to get done takes a lot of the stress away. Putting in more time and making it to your liking is worth it. What came out is some-what very close to what I had pictured in my mind. This will help in the future by just working towards what I want.

Two studio habits of mind that I was working on were REFLECT and ENVISION. I used REFLECT by working and talking about my ideas with my classmates and Mrs. Underhill. They gave me feed-back and helped me assess my work. I used ENVISION by picturing what I wanted my art to look like and be. I took what I envisioned and tired to turn that into my artwork. I haven't finished my artwork yet.

I was observing the examples Mrs. Underhill gave, I was also observing how the materials worked and different ways to use them, also what they do if you press lightly or press harder. Another studio habit I used was DEVELOP CRAFT. I used that habit by learning the materials and how they work, what the best way is to use them. I also practice using the materials in different ways. (you told me that we didn't have to do the tutorial because we weren't done)
